Saradise Lost - Book 3 - Chapter 31 -- Saradise Lost Series Concluded

I. Unless the trajectory of Sarah Palin goes in a different direction than I foresee, this is the conclusion of the Saradise series at Progressive Alaska. In all, there have been 313 chapters:

Saradise Lost - Book One (about the McCain Palin campaign) - 181 chapters.

Saradise Lost - Book Two (the continuation of Palin's governorship, up to the resignation announcement) - 77 chapters.

Saradise Lost - Book Three (from the resignation announcement to abdication) - 31 chapters.
Saradise Found - 17 chapters.
Saradise Lost & Found - seven chapters.

I'm not going to write a post-mortem on the Palin administration yet. I've had the opportunity to speak to, correspond with or know all of Alaska's governors except for William Egan. Some expect or expected to be addressed as "Governor" after their terms of office, Wally Hickel in particular. I've had no problem with addressing him as "Governor." The last time I had that opportunity was at a fundraiser for Alaskans for Clean Elections, last year. Tony Knowles and Jay Hammond, as two-term governors deserve the honorific, in my mind. Bill Sheffield and Steve Cowper do not. I feel their administrations were, by and large, failures.

I will never call Sarah Palin "governor" as an honorific. Besides the obvious, that of her own volition, she failed to fulfill her duty of serving her term, she has repeatedly characterized people who disagree with her point of view as less worthy Alaskans or Americans than are those with whom she directly identifies.

The fact that the most famous Alaskan in our history has also been the most intensely polarizing figure in our state's or in our country's recent political events is disturbing. Not since George Wallace, has a person elevated to the level of a presidential contest final been so divisive. Although the attention Palin's national political aspiration has brought to Alaska has had its positive effect (more people down below seem to be more aware of Alaska's unique nature, for instance), the opposite side of that coin is that Palin is also the biggest political joke of the 21st century, and part of the joke is that she is such a caricature of aspects of what many of us hold to be important parts of our "Alaskan-ness."

II. Watching the adoration and rapture on the countenances of the crowd I saw at the picnic in Wasilla on Friday, and have seen in pictures of the Anchorage and Fairbanks events, troubled me too. As did her abdication speech's constant intermixture of military might & sacrifice, the sanctity of corporate power, and her version of "God." As his been Palin's habit of late, she seemed to be repeatedly accusing her opponents of "lies, stupidity and cowardice."

Many familiar with Adolf Hitler's rise between his release from Landsberg Prison and the 1933 German national election are unaware of the extent that Christian organizations supported him. Or of the extent of intermixture between the Nazi state and organized religion. As an example, here's a partial list of Catholic youth organizations alone that supported Hitler's rise from 1931 through 1933:

• The Catholic Young Men's Association of Germany
• The Central Association of Catholic Maidens
• The South German Association of Catholic Females
• The Association of Catholic Bachelors
• The Association of Bavarian Catholic Book Clubs
• The Association of Catholic Students in Institutions of Higher Learning
• Catholic Youth Alliance of German Working Girls

The membership of some of these groups reached into the high hundreds of thousands. Similar Protestant youth groups supported the rise of Hitler. And, of course, adult groups. During Wilhelmine Germany, the Weimar Republic and the National Socialists era, the German states ( Bayern, Baden, Nassau, and so on) directly supported the Christian church financially.

During the Third Reich, thousands of Christians served as chaplains in the Wehrmacht. Some fully supported the dehumanization of Slavs, the glorification of Der Fuhrer and the Holocaust of murder of Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals. The ideal of "blood sacrifice," alluded to so frequently in recent Palin speeches, was a constant fixture in Nazi pre-war and World War II propaganda.

Is this proto-Christofascist strain that has been ramped up so fully in Palin's recent speeches and twitters going to be key to her post-gubernatorial role? Whether or not she is striking out to start a third party, as some have speculated, I believe that she will draw more deeply into the well of dispensationalist Christofascism. She will, as many of us already know, attempt to hide this on some levels, but will be out front about it on others.

The Alaska media totally ignored this dangerous component of Palin's makeup, throughout her political career in Alaska. The tendency to ignore the dangers of strange and evil groups affiliated to dispensationalism, their infiltration of many of our military institutions and their units hasn't gone mainstream. Hopefully, as Palin is observed in her upcoming actions, this key aspect of her personality will not be ignored.

Interesting from Mamadance blog today:
"Journalist Carl Bernstein joined the “Morning Joe” panel to discuss Sarah Palin formally relinquishing the governorship of Alaska yesterday.
And he did not mince words regarding her fitness for national office, calling Palin “ignorant” and a “demagogue.”

Demagogy (also demagoguery) (Ancient Greek δημαγωγία, from δῆμος dēmos “people” and ἄγειν agein “to lead”) is a strategy for gaining political power by appealing to the prejudices, emotions, fears and expectations of the public — typically via impassioned rhetoric and propaganda, and often using nationalist, populist or religious themes. The term was used for the first time by Aristophanes in his satire against the demagogue Cleon.

The comparison to George Wallace, though, was right on. Thanks Phil!

I was afraid to say anything. But I'm glad it isn't just me.

I saw in Sarah Palin the same pathway Hitler took in Germany. I couldn't believe that no one else saw this. How could people not draw the parallels?

Except that Hitler wasn't stupid.

Which actually makes Palin scarier to me. I was absolutely terrified of her becoming VP and McCain dieing in office. *That* is the root of my detestation of Palin. It's no one thing. It's the sum of the parts which is greater than the whole.

I could see her destroying the world by bringing on a nuclear WWIII.

She's Hitler and Dr. Strangelove and Charles Manson.

We vow "never again" but we almost did. How could so many have been so blind? How can they continue to be so blind?

We must be continually vigilent to ensure that she never, ever gets that close to the White House ever again. We can't take the end of her term as Governor as assurance her political career is over. We must crush it over and over to make sure it never springs forth again.

Phil, you are dead on correct with your analysis. As is ella, who pointed out Carl Bernstein's characterization of Palin as a demagogue. She is also a sociopath who relies on her charm, pathological lying and relentless manipulation to dupe the poor, uneducated masses (lemmings) out of their hard-earned money and incite hatred and violence in the lunatic fringe. I believe she could be characterized as a type of antichrist. WWJD?

Neither organized religion nor a majority of the electorate is proof against fascism. Education, a vigilant press and outspoken citizens are the safety valve.

Good to see the end of the 3rd book of Saradise Lost. May there be no "regained" book to follow.

Thanks for all you do, Phil. Your flare for the in-depth post is a treasure.

Religious leaders in Hitler's Germany had to sign oaths of allegiances first to Hitler, not to their church beliefs. If they didn't, they were imprisoned and/or executed. Dietrich Bonhoeffer was one of those who wouldn't sign. His book Letters and Papers from Prison is remarkable. Also there's a good documentary on his life available at Loussac Library. He was executed after being imprisoned.
That being said, SP's behavior is especially unnerving because of the 'faith' she tries to associate it with. She seems to think she'll have unlimited forgiveness. I'm hoping it will end at some point - the forgiveness, that is. It IS very scary, bottom-line.

ella,

I've taken a year or more off from writing music to help in getting the truth out about Sarah Palin. What I've been sitting on, since August 29th last year is:

• Trombone Trio
• A percussion ensemble piece
• A piece for solo vibraphone
• Revision and re-orchestration of "Bamiyan Voids"
• Revision and orchestration of "The Skies are Weeping"
• A piece for dramatic speaker and orchestra, about Elizabeth Peratrovich, to be done with Diane Benson
• A song cycle for Kate Egan, Marlene Bateman and Juliana Osinchuk
• An overture for orchestra

Then a book maybe.....

alaskapi said...

She's been reminding me of Jim Jones lately...
The paranoia, the lashing out in some kind of fake-o righteous mode...
The besotted look on her fans' faces...

Jones was a pseudo-socialist so the similarity fails there...

The appeal of Hitler's fascist philosophy to so many religious groups... yup, closer to SP phenomenon.

I'm hoping I'm having my first and only nightmare/tinfoil hat/whatever experience- and that she just fades away...

And what a nice way to banish a nightmare!

"• A piece for dramatic speaker and orchestra, about Elizabeth Peratrovich, to be done with Diane Benson"

Well said, Phil. It's very scary - we must be vigilant.

"The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to be believed, for the vast masses of a nation are in the depths of their hearts more easily deceived than they are consciously and intentionally bad. The primitive simplicity of their minds renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one, for they themselves often tell little lies, but would be ashamed to tell big lies." from Mein Kampf

You are righ on target Phil, however, I think she will fail via her own mouth.

Her (picnic) resignation speech was made fun of on The View, Chris Matthews and Olberman and I expect Letterman will have a few words tonight.

Now that she feels unfettered by the title she doesn't feel she needs, I think her delusional stream of consciousness is going to be given free rein.

She will self-destruct. To put it bluntly, she doesn't have the IQ Hitler had. THOUGH I AM NOT AT ALL DEVALUING YOUR OPINIONS OF HER. SHE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE VERY DANGEROUS, BUT I THINK THE IQ IS MISSING. SHE WILL TRY, DEFINITELY, BUT I THINK SHE WILL FAIL.

It is totally appropriate to compare her to Hitler.

Sarah Palin is not psychologically stable and she is going to get worse. She is NOT going to get positive "narcissistic supply" but the media will continue to lambast and ridicule her.

She has NO place to run nor to hide.

She will become violent.
We are watching the progression of her illness (extreme narcissism) and she is deteriorating.

She will become violent.

Philip Munger said...

I wasn't comparing Palin directly to Hitler, although the term, "lies, stupidity and cowardice" - which sort of encapsulates the gist of her attacks on her critics - was the originally planned subtitle of Hitler's book:

Viereinhalb Jahre (des Kampfes) gegen Lüge, Dummheit und Feigheit, or Four and a Half Years (of Fighting) Against Lies, Stupidity and Cowardice.

What I'm concerned about more, though, is her embodiment, more and more of a sort of mysticism, based upon the combination of her dispensationalist Christianity, her worship of military might, her open description of what she regards to be the unquestionable "exceptionalism" of the USA, and her penchant to get away with veiled, racist terminology. In that, there's a similarity to what may become her platform to what Naziism was.

I suppose I'll be writing more about this.

Oh the irony of a Palin supporter taking issue with Palin being compared to Hitler. Or taking issue with the sentiments that Palin is fostering & encouraging being compared to those that spawned Hitler's rise to power...

The day after Obama won I received, from an acquaintance in Kenai, a vile hateful email comparing Obama to Hitler. I sent an email saying that I found it offensive, please do not EVER send something like that to me again. Received a second one from the same person, that one saying that Obama is the anti-Christ. That one got a reply from me, to everyone, saying that Palin embodied far more of the traits discussed in both emails than Obama did/does, and do not EVER email me ANYTHING again. What an uproar it caused. Those emails sent out by that "Christian" person, young children on her distribution list (!!!!!), was being picked on by me!!!!!!

Works both ways, Palin supporters, you can't claim that Hitler &/or Anti-Christ comparison thing for your purposes only!

Keep up the good work Phil. I hope that you'll have other things to report on now. I look forward to Alaska's pressing issues being addressed to the benefit of all Alaskans, and know that you can be counted on to continue to effect positive change.

Great post, Phil.

The only real power Palin has is given to her by the ignorant fans of hers. Palin by herself is not Hitler or any other person of worldly stature. She's simply a woman of limited intellect and experience who caught an amazing break from McCain. Now, she's been caricaturized by her fans as nothing short of the Savior of The USA and by her critics as a monster or monstrous joke. Neither one is true.

What is true is that she's a grasping, vain, ambitious, and narcissistic person who is milking her fame for all its worth. I sit back and marvel at the exaggerated and disparate reactions of people to such an utterly average woman.

Unknown said...

When you read the definition of demagogy (thanks ella), it's incredible how accurately it describes Palin's "leadership" style. I would take exception only to the word "strategy" as it applies to her own actions, since I don't believe she has the capacity to understand or evaluate the effect of alternative approaches on the end game. It is her ignorance in not realizing that she serves as a useful tool (or idiot) for those much more powerful than herself, who are actually devising the strategies she so faithfully carries out.

When she talks about being "wired" to do things a certain way, I don't think she realizes the extent to which she is driven by the indoctrination she has submitted herself to, resulting in a blind allegiance to the very propaganda she employs to keep her fan base entranced. Add charisma with a dash of borderline personality disorder to the mix, and you have one crazy ex-Governor who has already gotten closer to the White House than anyone would have ever imagined.

I don't know which is scarier - the useful idiot who believes their own propaganda, or the wizard behind the curtain - but the phenomenon of Sarah Palin, despite the comedy it provides, is definitely more than a laughing matter. I agree with Phil wholeheartedly that we would be remiss in ignoring the dangers that she, along with the groups she represents, still pose to our country and the world.

I also want to thank you Phil for all the work you've done to bring these issues to our attention over the past year, while the MSM has been busy with their usual inattention to detail where it matters. We owe a great debt to the collective efforts of those Alaskans who were willing to take a stand and help the rest of the country understand what was really going on in your state. I have no doubt you helped us all dodge a bullet, and I for one am very grateful. I wish you luck with your new Governor, and your personal endeavors.

Great post. Yes, we should be worried about a politician/elected official who (1) launched personal attacks on citizens who questioned her actions (thereby discouraging others from doing the same); (2) blamed the media constantly (in her regime, freedom of the press would be the first to go); and (3) is unwilling and unable to separate church and state.

Thanks for getting this warning out to the public. I made this argument numerous times when people would laugh and say Palin is just a joke. I would mention the little corporal that brought war to the whole world.I also point out the rise of G.W.Bush to the most powerful position in the world even though he was a complete failure at everything he had ever done in his life. He did it by claiming to be a reborn Christian who got advice on how to do things straight from God. Our education system in this country has been ruined so people don't have the intelligence to make an informed decision during an election. Bush being elected in 2004 and Palin being elected governor when it was obvious they weren't qualified to govern is proof of this. We can't depend on the press to alert us because in both the above cases the press only published what the official spokes person wanted published. The power of bloggers has been proved BUT people like Palin want to take that power away. She recently stated that in one of her ramblings while preparing to leave office. Wake Up America! It can happen here!

Aleut Granddaughter said...

AlaskaPi has a chilling point - don't ever forget Jonestown. There is something really wrong about the way Palin is put together. She shores up the churchy ones and is trying really hard to ingratiate herself to the military folks.

Since she has this weird thing about feds, I find it very telling that she panders to military folks individually - as though she is trying to build their support for her little gang o' god zombies.

I'm glad the bloggers rode her all the way out of the state capital, tally ho! Just keep in mind that she makes the hair stand up on the back of many people's necks, so there will be reinforcements outside to keep track of her, also - too.

We will clean up the mess she left in our government, even if it takes awhile. There are quite a few people she left behind who need to get booted out the door, too, also - such as Mike Nizich and Linda Perez for starters.

She is just a bad memory in our state government, but I will be keeping a close eye on her. I take every chance I can to shove the real Sarah Palin in front of those who still don't know her. I will never stop doing that as long as she's trying to affect public policy.

Good work Phil - and look at all that beautiful music she has stolen from us - at least til now. She has robbed of us of time and the better pursuits which bring us happiness and joy - she will pay the piper for that, I have no doubt! Palin the Vampire pretty much sums it up!

On to the better pursuits in life now that Palin the whack job quits her post! Hurray!

It is most important that people are made to see that what happened in Germany COULD happen again in this supposedly civilized country if its citizens allow it. Did we not ust allow our leaders to throw the Geneva conventions out the window because those in power thought they were better than the rest of the citizens of Earth and didn't have to follow the rules?

Isn't Palin (and Bush and Cheney before her) a person who also does not think she has to follow rules because she has some sort of delusion that God has chosen her to lead others? Does she not also divide people into "real Americans" and those not worthy?

We very much need to revisit German history to see how the indoctrination occured among a WILLING segment of the populace--we need to read Mein Kampf, read up on the histories, read or listen to any and all oral histories from those victimized and those who were enmeshed in and participated in the evil done to those deemed "unworthy", and then make double-damn sure that when we see this sort of hate being hawked as Patriotism, Nationalism, and (false) Christianity, that we have the moral courage to stand up against it and denounce it for what it is.

So, we're with you on this one, Phil.

to mlaiuppa--nope, I got cold chills listening to Palin spew lies to adoring new fans at the Republican Convention, and at the time I happened to be reading a history of the Holocaust and I read the rest of it knowing it was not just something that happened once in history, but could well happen again here, in this country. She and her ilk and the people who agree with her nonsense all scare me, but my hope is that sensible people outnumber sheeple.

It's funny (in a sad sort of way) that these Palin supporters are partly angry and rude because they feel they are a minority. They want a voice! So what do they do? Visit blogs around the country (and some globally) and insult everyone instead of fighting to convert. Is this logical or smart? No. Case closed.

Palin supporters - I don't have to care about you now that Palin is kicked out of gov't - apparently by bloggers if you listen to her take on it. You are a stark minority, and with your current strategies in place, you will only grow or maintain your numbers through breeding. And Palin won't look so great by the time they are ready to vote!

Also note that overall, Americans are becoming less religious, not more. Your numbers are shrinking. I don't have to be subjected to any candidate you folks get behind because you will never win. Case closed.

We still have a fight ahead of us, but at least more Americans are recognizing how close we came to fascism in what we thought was a free country. And really, the terms "fascism" and "communism" are camouflage for the underlying issue: Power. People want power. Sarah Palin has never given me any sense that she truly believes in anything other than taking what she wants by any means possible. Remember? "I can do anything I want, until a court tells me I can't." She has no limits, other than the ones imposed by her own incompetence.

2. Disdain for the importance of human rights.
3. Identification of enemies/scapegoats as a unifying cause.
4. The supremacy of the military/avid militarism.
5. Rampant sexism.
6. A controlled mass media.
7. Obsession with national security.
8. Religion and ruling elite tied together.
9. Power of corporations protected.
10. Power of labor suppressed or eliminated.
11. Disdain and suppression of intellectuals and the arts.
12. Obsession with crime and punishment.
13. Rampant cronyism and corruption.
14. Fraudulent elections.

It's the danger signs of Fascism.

What is so dangerous about her now is that she has entranced the disenfranchised far-christian-right, and with the economy going the way it is, well these people are growing in numbers each day.

They are the ones that work in the trades that build homes and cars that, well, aren't getting built right now. They feel afraid and put upon by the minority person that is running our country (even though him and his party have nothing the THEIR best interests in mind).

They are so ready to rally behind someone that has the same mindset and educational level that they do that it really is frightening.

I'm getting emails all of the time from my relatives in Virginia that ARE THESE PEOPLE; these people looking for hope in a dire time.

I just have to return their mails and try to convince them that they are looking in the wrong place for hope and change.

I like to put my faith in people that have proven themselves to be harder working, more intelligent and more able to run a government than I would be able to be.

That's why we elect LEADERS.

We can't all be leaders, but hell, I want the leader of my country to be all that I did not have the time, intelligence or intestinal fortitude to be. I don't want to lead the country, but I have to put faith in someone and that someone should HAVE MUCH BETTER CREDENTIALS THAN I DO.

I probably wouldn't relate to this person so much, perhaps I shouldn't, but qualifications speak volumes.

Hell, I like the person that serves me coffee each morning and we have much in common, but I don't want her running my country.

I wouldn't worry about Palin. While she is charismatic and has a following, her political "machine" is very grass roots compared to Obama's sophisticated network of wealthy, powerful players all over the world.

If anyone has the power to change this country into fascism, communism, socialism...whatever you want to call it, it's Obama. I suggest you all start researching his (and his wife's) tangled web that goes way back.

And if you think Obama is free of 'Chicago-style' politics or doesn't have an ideological plan for the country, then you are as blind as the people who cannot see any of Palin's failings.

Forget Palin. She isn't the one that has the power to do that because the change is happening now.

This site at Calvin College (liberal arts college) has a good selection of Third Reich documents, focused on propaganda:

This isn't a discussion over the elderly and disabled that happen to die everyday in every part of the world, can they all be saved and would they have passed away anyhow? You better check up on Obama's health care idea because it includes every five years someone discussing with the elderly and disabled the possible "cure" by assisted suicide. Now that sounds like Hitler to me! Or are you that ignorant of how the death camps started back in the days...?

And again, as far as I'm concerned Palin can believe anything she wants on religion' it is still sort of a free country.

I'd rather have someone who believes the Jews moving to Israel will bring the Messiah around as opposed to those like Phil or possibly yourself that believes the Jews don't deserve anything but a large oven or mass graves.
Just listen to the horn tooting turd when it comes to his "Pali" friends. Although it's just a name tacked on by the Romans but that is another story for another time.

And for those that don't remember, Palin spoke of the attack at the Holocaust Memorial and gave her praise and words of sympathy over it which is more than I can say for Phil or his fellow liberal bloggers. Neither he nor his chubby friend (we know who she is) said a damn thing about it on their blogs.
I believe she was surrounded by smiling Jews as she proclaimed April 19-26 "Remembrance Day", a fair chance a few of the same sat and slammed her like crazy for being selected as McCain's running mate.

Go on and suck up to the likes of Phil though, he'll take really good care of you and your families I'm sure!

For a so-called Christian woman, Sarah Palin is a vicious, whining, finger-pointing witch unable to assume any responsibility for her downfall. One of these days, even her loyal Christian followers are going to notice that underneath Sarah’s beauty is a warthog!

@11:48 a.m. - Why do you always resort to ad hominem attacks on this blog? You are irrational. Honestly, I can't tell what your socio-political beliefs are except that they are anti-Obama and pro-Palin: the Rapturist doesn't scare you but the Healthcare Guy does.

The End of the World is okay with you. But healing people? Not so much. Do you ever read your own rants before hitting"Publish Your Comment?"

I am getting tired of proving my points. It is not so hard to google these things to find out for yourself...if you care to know the truth.

No, the likes of Palin does not scare me and the end of the world doesn't scare me either. You see if a god no matter who happens to believe in he/she/it decides to take us all out we don't have a choice now do we?

And y'all should know about attacking people...you do it enough!

As for Oblahma's health care plan, if you don't mind them wanting to put you down like a sick dog when you get old more power to you but I don't want anything to do with it thank you very much.

@Anon, 4:22 p.m. You still don't make any sense. It is tiresome and quite rude that you continually employ ad hominem attacks on me (as you did above) in order to complain about our President. Post hoc ergo propter hoc: you connect two completely separate issues in your response. Why not go complain to others who are not interested in debates based on facts? I think Obama is doing remarkable things after the 8 year mess he's inherited. If you don't, please explain WHICH policies of a politician currently in office should be implemented instead. Because the GOP has nothing.
