Saradise Lost - Book 4 - Chapter 46 -- Palin Drives Libertarians Out of the Tea Party

--- by Jane Hamsher

Sarah Palin got a lot of publicity for speaking at the Tea Party convention in Nashville, but I’m not sure she knew where she was because her Sunday morning follow-up hit a sour note note that destroyed whatever support she got from appearing there in the first place:

President Barack Obama won’t be re-elected in 2012 unless he can “toughen up” on national security, according to Sarah Palin. The former Governor of Alaska believes that declaring war on Iran could help the president get re-elected.

“Say he decided to declare war on Iran or decided really to come out and do whatever he could to support Israel, which I would like him to do,” Palin told Fox News’ Chris Wallace Sunday. “That changes the dynamics in what we can assume is going to happen between now and three years.”

She might as well have said “let’s burn the constitution and expand the Fed.”

Granted, the tea party messaging can be pretty schizophrenic and has often served as a grab bag of anti-Obama sentiment. But their primary message has always been economic, and they have their roots in the libertarian-leaning, anti-interventionist conservatism of Ron Paul.

Tea party star Allen West, who raised over twice as much in the 4th quarter of 2009 as Democratic incumbent Ron Klein (FL-22), says “We must get away from occupation warfare and nation building.” Rand Paul, who is very likely to win Jim Bunning’s Kentucky Senate seat, would’ve voted against the war in Iraq and wants a constitutional declaration to continue the war in Afghanistan. Adam Kokesh is running as an anti-war candidate against Democratic Rep. Ben Ray Luján in Arizona’s third congressional district (Lujan voted for the war supplemental).

There’s a tension within the conservative movement right now between the more social conservative, neocon wing that Palin represents, and the anti-tax tea party libertarians who have stronger paleo leanings. The latter have an ugly nativist streak, but they are straining to get away from George Bush’s war. It’s gays & God vs. guns.

There was a lot of pushback because of the price of the Palin tickets, and many of the rank-and-file tea party activists see her as a symbol of the establishment GOP’s attempt to co-opt their nascent movement.

Palin evidently thought she could endorse Rand Paul and they’d all throw flowers at her feet. Instead they’re having a melt down over her speech, trying to figure out how to keep the neocons out of future conventions.

Rather than navigating the gulf between the tea party activists and the GOP, Palin drove a wedge between them.

Well, at least she had the good sense not to mention her Bridge to Nowhere. But you have to wonder why they invited her there in the first place.

$P did not clean up corrupt government; the GW Bush Justice Dep't ineptly attempted to do so. One case was totally dismissed, two are on appeal. None of the "government corruption" cases were brought by the State of Alaska.

Randy Ruedrich is still the head of the GOP in Alaska. Sarah made many claims against him, but did not force him from office. She worked with him in slamming the GW Bush Dep't of Justice for its case against former US Senator Ted Stevens. Of course, this was after $P's demand for "uncle Ted's" resignation when he was found guilty by a jury.....

$P doesn't declare her greatly improved real property to the borough as required by Alaska Statute. She didn't want to pay the extra $1,500 a year (or so) in property tax.....

She begs you and others for money to fund her "cause" SarahPac and yet only contributed $63,000 (or so) to candidates from over $2,000,000 raised.....

I can go on, but those are the basics.

To comment to the post, $P already said the Tea Party should become part of the GOP. It is very clear, at the moment, that she does not want the Tea Party to be a true independent third party. This could easily change if she really wants to run for President and the Republican establishment (not the neocons) does not fully support her and cheer her on.

Hopefully all will take a look at where this country has gone in the last 10 years and ask themselves what caused the majority of the deficit that arose during the Bush years. IF people honestly look at spending during those years, they will realize this country cannot afford another war. To top it off, the military has already said it is finding it difficult to staff the missions it already has. How can the military come up with the people and money for training and arming our forces adequately to strike Iran?

If you want MUCH higher taxes, please go ahead and encourage $P and her war mongering. War has to be paid for in terms of humans and funds and the only way to do so will be to institute the draft and dramatically raise taxes.

Of course, if you are among the neocons, you won't mind because you and your children won't be here to pay the price (assuming you get your wish for the Rapture).

"She begs you and others for money"

Please give examples of Sarah Palin "Begging" for money .

And isn't Jane Hamsher the racist who photoshopped Joe Lieberman in black-face. Why is this site turning into a racist, sexist hate-site ? What is happening to this world ?

ET- what on god's green earth gave you the idea to put up the saint/ slut poll?

It seems totally out of character for you, and I find it offensive. I've never had reason to criticize you before, and you know I hope that I've supported you ever since when, in various venues, for your wise and measured words.

But the poll is really offensive.

Yours,
