The New Float - Part One

I'm getting ready to build a new float for the lake, to replace one I built in 1996. It was built with untreated wood and cheap paint and hardware. This one will be made from treated wood and the best paint and hardware for fresh water I can get. Hopefully, it will last until 2030.

It will be slightly larger than 12 feet by 8 feet. Here's the treated plywood.

And here are two of the four styrofoam logs that I'll cover with fiberglass wrap.

Phil, the styrofoam floats will gradually disintegrate to little white beads that will coat your shoreline. I know from experience. Go to AK Docks and use their Ace floats that are plastic shells with styrofoam injected.

Steve - I coat them myself, as stated above. The coating lasts the life of the floats, unless something cuts into it.

the "treatment" on the plywood is a pollutant

The wood gets coated with two to three coats of the best marine epoxy available. It lasts the life of the float.

The wood doesn't lie in the water, it sits above it, floated by the foam logs that are coated in plastic.
