The June Mat-Su Democrats Egan Dinner, newly relocated to Turkey Red Restaurant in Palmer, had two featured speakers.
Kathy Wells, Executive Director of Friends of Mat-Su, spoke about some of the changes in current in the Mat-Su Borough administration since the October 2009 election. She was quite careful to not go too far in characterizing the recent moves toward more secretive and manipulative procedures by the borough, as she has to deal with these people on a daily basis.
All I'm going to say on this at this post is that every time you have to stop for one of those huge coal-laden trucks coming down the road beginning sometime soon, it should have Talis Colberg's picture on it, with a big shit-eating grin, and the caption, "Thanks for electing me, Suckers!"
I gave a pitch for people at the dinner to join Friends of Mat-Su. Kathy couldn't, because she is staff. But I'm on the board of FoMS, and no longer an officer for the Mat-Su Democrats, so I made the pitch. I'll make it here again:
If you want coal dust all over the main transport routes in the Valley, go ahead and let it happen. If you want to help people who want our Valley to be livable, friendly and safe from rapacious industrial practices, support Friends of Mat-Su.

Scott McAdams, who is running in the Democratic Party primary for the U.S. Senate seat held by Lisa Murkowski, gave a very interesting short stump speech. Scott, who is mayor of Sitka, described how, watching Sen. Lisa Murkowski attempt to kill the first attempt to update liability limits for oil companies when they foul our waters, got him to decide to run against her. It is a compelling description.
I have no doubt that McAdams will make a better senator than Murkowski, the minute he walks into the office he wins from her. And, yes, after listening to Scott describe to the 50 people at the dinner what he believes in, I think he might be able to pull it off.
More coming on Scott. I was far more impressed with him as a person and as a candidate than I thought I would be.
