Goodbye, Mama Africa....

Swazi-Xhosa singer Miriam Makeba died in Castel Volturno, near Caserta, Italy, yesterday evening, of a heart attack, shortly after taking part in a concert organized to support writer Roberto Saviano in his stand against the Camorra, a Neopolitan-based transnational mafia-like organization. Makeba, a longtime peace and civil rights activist, and a true citizen of the world, was 76.

I had the honor seeing her perform at the Sandton Sun hotel in 1990. It was her first day back from exile and people were begging her to sing; and so she did. Both she and the audience of 100 or so were in in ecstasy.

In my 20's at the time and having no idea who she was or the magnitude of what I was witnessing, I whispered to a friend of mine, "She's really quite good, you know." He still teases me to this day about that.

I will miss her.
She was an important part of my growing up and becoming aware.

I just heard about this a little while ago. Sad! She was amazing.
