Mr. Lucero Goes To Washington

Mat-Su Democrats Vice President, and District 14 Chairman Gil Lucero announced late last week that he's taking a job in Washington, D.C. at the Headquarters for the National Agricultural Statistics Service.

I've been serving with Gil on one board or another for the past four years. His unnecessary humility was matched by his energetic approach to helping reorganize the Democratic Party in the Valley. He was instrumental in facing the tasks of getting ready for the Super Tuesday Democratic Caucuses. He was hip-deep in wading through the intricacies of getting our region ready for the upcoming Alaska Democratic Party Convention, to be held at the State Fairgrounds over Memorial Day weekend.

I worked with Gil on the Friends of Mat-Su Board before he left to spend more time in his Party activities. He was extremely helpful to FoMS as the organization co-ordinated efforts to stop insane coal bed methane development proposals. His Mat-Su Democrats newsletter is probably the best area newsletter in the state. I've volunteered to take that over from him on the newsletter - I'm the incoming area secretary. Usually, that newsletter job would be the secretary's, but Gil insisted on keeping it, because he liked doing the work. I'll try, Gil.

We'll miss Gil, all of our growing numbers.
