More Alaskan College Athletes Outside Get Recognition

On a month that has so far included Mario Chalmers' last ditch three-point shot that will go down in NCAA basketball final four history, I'm happy to report that Alaskans have another team we can be rooting for - Western Washington University's women's crew team. They've won the last three NCAA Division II national championships, and are unanimously favored to win this year's championship at the end of May.

The WWU Vikings participate in the same league as UAA in many sports, but crew isn't one of them. Although the Viking women show up at Bellingham Washington's Lake Samish at 0500 many times to wipe the ice off their oars and seats, the lake doesn't freeze over. Unlike our lakes around here.

There is no college rowing in Alaska on a serious level. Which is part of why it is so remarkable that the Vikings' team has four Alaska women on it. My daughter, Julia, is one of them. Ron Wilmot at the Anchorage Daily News wrote an article about this team in today's edition. It didn't make it to the regular print edition today, but was in their weekend Mat-Su Valley sports roundup, because Julia was a runner at Colony High School.

Go, Vikings! Go, Pooh!
