Hate Speech? What Do You Think?

On Friday afternoon, at about 4:54 p.m, KFQD radio host and Anchorage Daily News columnist made the following statements:

Fagan: You don't know who Louis Farrakhan is?

Girl on show: No I don't...

Fagan: He's the head of the Nation of Islam of the United States, he's a big, uh...y'know - hates Jews. But all Muslims are supposed to hate Jews. To be a good Muslim.

Girl on show: See, I'm not a Jew, so I didn't know that.

Fagan: You don't have to be Muslim to know that Muslims are supposed to hate Jews.

I transcribed that from the podcast available at KFQD. Friday's hour three section, which should still be up there, puts this segment at 49:18 to 49:35.

Although the rest of the show is filled with more examples of Fagan's and his sidekick's ignorant drivel, none of it quite rises to this level of what I regard as hate speech. My wife says she regards it as "borderline" hate speech, but the other people I've run this by feel it rises to the level of hate speech.

I'm writing to the publisher of the Anchorage Daily News and the Manager of KFQD. An apology to Anchorage's Muslim community is the least I'll be pushing for:

So-- it's OK for a Muslim to hate a Jew? How are they to take out their anger? Does this include Sikh Muslims of India? What about new Muslin converts?

Why Judith, how the heck are ya?

By the way....

...yes, it's hate speech.

I guess it depends on how you define hate speech. I think a key factor in determining if something is hate speech is what the intent was and perhaps also what the outcome was.

If the intent was for people to hate Muslims or to take actions against Muslims, then it's probably hate speech.

If it is someone simply repeating stuff he's heard thinking it to be true, I'm not sure if that counts. But if someone repeats falsehoods on a regular basis on a radio program, and the station does nothing about it, it suggests to me that the station is encouraging ignorance (and the resulting hate) because it makes them money or because they support uncivil society.

Perhaps it is the station manager and or owner that is guilty for knowingly keeping someone on the air who regularly says things that are untrue and inflammatory.

Anonymous: I'm not sure what your point is. Are you defending Fagan by asking whether it is ok to hate Jews?

I think the point Phil was making was that hating Jews is not a basic part of Islam. That what Fagan said was not true. I'm not an expert in Islam, but I do understand there are issues about differences between Muslims and non-Muslims, and that opportunist mullahs may take advantage of this and the ignorance of uneducated Muslims to interpret the Koran to mean you should hate all 'infidels.'

But it is no different from Christian preachers interpreting the bible to say blacks should be slaves, that homosexuality is evil, that a war should be fought, or that parishioners should vote for a specific candidate.

Second, Anonymous, what is a Sikh Muslim? The Sikh religion is a separate religion from Islam. It has its spiritual headquarters at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab state, India. You can get more information here.

Don't bother with the stations - they do not care. Get the list of sponsors of the show, and write them a letter than you will not do business with them because of their support of a racially offensive radio, show. Get others to join the boycott. The ONLY reason Talk Radio is on the air are the Arbitron Ratings and the advertising profits they draw.

Heck, my family still will not do business with Alaska Sausage in Anchorage and Wilderness Nursery on Trunk Road because of the anti-Native, anti-Subsistence stance they take in supporting the Alaska Outdoor Council. If we weren't so busy otherwise making a living, I would get more serious about the boycott, but we tell people not to do business with them, if they seem interested. I know it cost them some substantial business here and there, and that's fine by me. That's the social and financial price they pay for being racist.

Dear Mr. Progressive -

1) Dan Fagan's show is over at 5 p.m. Maybe you were listening to some other show?

2) Dan Fagan has a right to his opinion. As a matter of fact, he is PAID to voice his opinion.

3) If he upsets you so much, why do you listen?

Oh and, Polarbear - Wilderness Nursery sold their land and assets and moved away.

Well, looks my Wilderness Nursery boycott worked after all...

Thanks for making my point about Dan Fagan. He is PAID to voice his opinion, and when doesn't PAID by advertisers, he doesn't get paid to voice his opinion.

Racist opinions voiced on media anywhere are hateful, hurtful, polarizing, and counterproductive for our community. Racism causes people to act out of fear.

anonymous @ comment #6 -

fixed the time thingie - thanks.

I had been reporting here earlier on the GOP Convention, and was listening to how other local media was reporting the event. KFQD news had been erroneously reporting on their afternoon news segments that when Lt. Gov. Parnell had announced his candidacy for the US House, Don Young had gotten up and left the room. Along with another listener, I had called Fagan - who was reiterating KFQD's erroneous report - to correct the error.

Accuracy in local news, and responsibility in the way opinion makers are presented are of high interest during time of war, and are major themes here. Fagan's irresponsible content isn't the only example of such problems that have been covered here. I also write about subjects the local media tend to avoid.

Of particular interest to me has been Fagan's rantings and writings when it comes to racial, social and religious issues. Essentially, I'm certain he intentionally pushes a divisive agenda. I'm not sure yet why he does that, or why KFQD and the ADN seem to be so welcoming to the controversy that brings.

[5.51] O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.

----

You will find others who desire that they should be safe from you and secure from their own people; as often as they are sent back to the mischief they get thrown into it headlong; therefore if they do not withdraw from you, and (do not) offer you peace and restrain their hands, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them; and against these We have given.you a clear authority.

If I read this right it sort of says convert, submit or die.
Sounds like hate speech to me.

Islam, much like Communism, is one of those all or nothing deals, either they will win and we will all be Muslims or dead, or they will loose and we will convert or kill them all. And if they win then they will kill each other until they figure out which Nephew of Mohamed cracked his eggs on the wide end.

The truth is that Muslims do indeed hate Jews. And yes, it is part of Islam, this prejudice against Jews! Islam describes Jews as " apes and swine" and in the daily prayers of Muslims, they are a "people with whom God is angry." Permanently angry. How do I know? I converted to Islam and spent years in this barbaric religion. I knew plenty of "average, everyday" Muslims and I even married one. Since I was a convert, Muslims dropped their usual front of semi-polite dishonesty. Wake up, all you "politically correct", factually incorrect idealists! You have no clue as to what Islam means ("submission", "surrender") and what the ummah (Muslim community acting as one...in other words, mob "justice") has planned for the West.
