The look-the-other-way cultural leaning among some Natives is just one of the reasons a disproportionate number of Native women are sexually assaulted and raped each year.
Oh please...Native Culture is far from having the corner on the market of "if we ignore it maybe it will go away!" We have to look no farther than the Juneau Police underreporting rapes to see that.

The crime reporting from the Department of Justice speaks for itself:
According to the US Department of Justice, in at least 86 per cent of reported cases of rape or sexual assault against American Indian and Alaska Native women, survivors report that the perpetrators are non-Native men. The Department’s data on sexual violence against non-Native women, in contrast, shows that for non-Indigenous victims, sexual violence is usually committed within an individual’s own race.
Let me repeat that again...I know that Fagan fans are slower than most:

Dan, this means that if you REALLY WANTED to HELP Native women you would tell that pack of Neanderthal droolers you call a fan-base to go jump in the ring at "Thursday Night at the Fights" if they feel the need to prove their dominance over another human being. Finding the nearest woman, Native or otherwise, and treating her like a sex slave punching bag or molesting the neighbor's daughter will get them serious jail time.
In most cases, I would simply suggest telling them it is just plain "WRONG". However, it's clear that both you AND your fans are kinda fuzzy on the meaning of THAT word.

You know, Phillip, I listen to someone like Rev Wright, speaking in Detroit today, and it made me proud to be a citizen of the same country as that man, and left me smiling inside for hours. How different to have that experience and then read the ADN Sunday paper. Surely our paper has more educated, experienced, and positive voices for our community than Fagan.

I read Fagan's column this morning (why? Why do I ruin a good cup of coffee?). And that minor little statistic was LOUDLY missing from his paper. Does he not bother to research his opinions? It really does add insult to injury.
Point of information (discussing epidemiology in a political context can be problematic), but it should be noted the DoJ stats apply to the USA as a whole and not to Alaska, certainly not to Alaska outside of Fairbanks and Anchorage.

The actual percentage in Alaska wouldn't be relevant anyway because the original original comments(Fagan) were stupid to begin with.
there's a UN study that came out last summer that is more damning than the DOJ one. I may update this in the morning. It is more detailed in its Alaska data, IIRC.
One of the most important details of both studies is that the problem gets worse, year by year, not better. The agencies responsible for fixing the problem know this, yet triage toward other problems in their budget processes.
Unresolved law enforcement and legal jurisdictional disputes, especially in the Dakota reservations and Alaska, favor the hiding of relevant data about white perpetrators of abuse to the point that - if anything - the incidence of white male against Native female abuse incidents are far more under-reported than among the female population of the USA as an entirety.

According to a 2003 UAA study, Alaska Native women made up 45.0% of the victims of sexual violence from 2000-2003 in Anchorage. They make up only 10.6% of the Anchorage population. Also, white men were the most frequent perpetrators of sexual assault - making up 39.6% of known perpetrators with Alaska Native men at 22.3%.
According to the Amnesty Report regarding Alaska:
While overall the data available appears to indicate that
a significant number of perpetrators are non-Indian, there is a lack of quantitative data on the ethnic origin or Indigenous status of perpetrators of sexual violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women. More data is urgently needed...
I believe the newspaper runs Fagan because he generates lots of letters to the editor. If he ever had an original thought it would be shocking.
What also bothers me about Fagan's comments is that he's laying the blame at the feet of the victims/survivors. Anon is right that the comments are DUMB to begin with... Fagan thinks a woman somehow deserves to be raped, unless she says "no" or the perp thinks she'll report it? Bullsh*t !!!! Isn't he also one of the people who said that Native culture allowed priests to molest children by being silent?

White man in Alaska has got some problems. Young White man has got even more.
The prevailing attitude for young White man is the Native women is there to take. Hell, I've heard from my young White man peers, that the Native women is free and easy. I've heard this more than twice, in highschool. I won't go into the ilk that was stated as a young White man adult.

I've had the crap beat out of me, because I wouldn't partake in the opinion. And I didn't have to say anything. All I did was walk away, cause it didn't feel good hearing the prevailing young White man attitude.
That prevailing attitude is huge. Real huge. I would like to suggest those that be troubled over this, place a HUGE focus on Alaska's young White man problem with other races.
As a young Alaskan White man, with total immersion in that young Alaskan White man culture, it is needed very much.
The likes of Fagan and his followers are the problem and I understand you see it as such. But I ask, how can Alaska's young White man be normally productive without having to embrace artificial ilk?
