Mildred Munger - 1918-2013

My mom, Milly Munger, passed away late yesterday morning, south of Seattle.

She had been playing croquet with friends at the retirement home in Des Moines, where she had been residing since March.  She had won the first game, and was having a wonderful time, when her huge heart gave out on her.  She passed out and away on a warm, sunny morning.  She was happy up until the time she was called away.

She leaves her daughter, Judy Koenig, three sons - Phil, Steve and Bob, twelve grandkids and one great-granddaughter.  She was preceded by her husband, Gene, and son, Gene.

Judy and I got to spend Christmas break with mom.  Our kids, Julia and Alex visited her within the past two weeks.

She was finishing one of the finest of the hundreds of hand-stitched quilts she had made over the past decades.  She had hoped to enter it in the Washington State Fair, where she has won awards in the past.  We're going to try to encourage members of her quilting club to finish it for her, so it can be entered:

My favorite recent picture of mom was last August, when I accompanied her, Judy and Julia around Mt. Rainier:

Phil, thank you for this wonderful tribute to one of the finest women I have ever met. I will so miss her smiles, and the interest that she took in me and my family.. I am so happy that she died playing, I can hear her laughing at her missed shots and the encouragement she gave others. I also know she would have been trying her best to win!

I grew to love her, and she was one of the women who filled the role of a loving mother to me.. Tank you for sharing her with us. It is going to be a difficult August for the Munger family, and she will be so missed at Julia's wedding.

My condolences to you and Judy and Julia and Alex..

Hi Phil,

very sorry to hear that your mom passed away. She looked like a strong, thoughtful and active woman. It is always the hardest when the mother passes away, I guess. Our condolences.

Phil,

I've been off internet since early this month and just saw this and I'd like to offer my condolences, however, you mom seems to have lived a rich long life and you and your family were able to enjoy each other's company for a good long time. Really, that is all we can ask for and after crying for nearly 1/2 hour after my mother just left for the airport after our vacation together I can't imagine not knowing there isn't another trip just around the corner where we will meet somewhere again for another vacation and another adventure. Mothers, they are the glue that holds our families together and they are special and we are surely blessed with every moment we get to spend with them.
