It's come to that these days - I have to read very carefully to figure out which side the writer is against. All the rhetoric reads the same. All the horrific abusive details, the human rights issues, the atrocities and indignities and hardship.

And that, friends, is the point. It reads the same, from both sides. Indistinguishable.

I cannot even argue this issue anymore. It would really really really be good if people could first read the British White Paper and familiarize themselves with how this came to be in the first place. What the time period was and the context for all of it (not just the side you like, but ALL of it), whose fault it is and who the bad guys are, etc etc.

Then, understand what Gaza Strip is. How it came to be. Get it that each side, every perspective, has leadership and political representation. The people, those who bear the brunt of the violence, aren't just autonomous individuals with no voice. Don't you think the leadership might bear responsibility for this mess?

Consider this: imagine that England freaked out when the U.S. bought Russian Alaska. Because they were working a deal (or planning to seize it), which is why Seward brought it to Andrew Johnson in the first place. America didn't support the deal. They didn't see value and didn't want it. It was considered junk land and a poor deal at a bad time.
So let's pretend that England orders Canadian soldiers to hold the border and clear the border territory. There's people already there and adventurers and explorers looking for gold and furs, coming and going. Everybody engages with everybody else. Contentious violence. Who had it first, who belongs there, who developed something that nobody else wanted. So the U.S. sends in its soldiers to establish "peace." Then there's a lotta confusion and alliances and everyone's a looong way from home and leadership. There's a bunch of Tlingits and Athabascans that get a raw deal all around.
The Canadians rout out the U.S. and send Tlingits packing in the process. The U.S. takes it back and beats up on everybody, detaining and removing a bunch of foreign national gold miners and Natives from both countries. And then put an entirely new group of people in there, luring them with free homesteads, land grants, development cash, etc. etc. Followed, of course, by the de rigueur soldiers of fortune and opportunists selling goods, weapons, booze and entertainment to whomever will pay. And they're makin' a few deals of their own...

Back at the ranch, politicians are scheming as they are wont to do. A couple of rogue Russkies that never wanted to sell in the first place do some smokey back-room deals with some Canadians (in partnership with Ukrainian Mafia). And in turn, they do some dirty double-crossing with American politicians. U.S. politicians work some secret deals with England, leaving out the Canadians altogether. And so on and so forth, for decades.

In the meantime, Tlingits and Athabascans who needed to escape the nonsense got the heck out of there, some to Fairbanks and some to Whitehorse. Decades later, they want their original homeland back, that got taken from them by threat of violence and resettled.
Now everybody's all confused. Nobody knows who's original Canadian or U.S. or foreigner or whatever.

Quick! Without thinking - who's the bad guys? Who belongs there? Whose was it to begin with? Who should be there now? Under what government?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2083200247132907218.post-47793269496361129722011-10-22T15:00:43.475-08:002011-10-22T15:00:43.475-08:00Rachel Abrams drank her husbands koolaid. His daughters were killed by bombs, torn to pieces in their bedroom. He had to endure endless searches, waits, rules, more searches, and atrocities that sounded like they came right out of Berlin in 1942 in order to leave Gaza to go to work. With food and water cut off, he carried as much as he could back into Gaza for his family. These are people too, people created by God. I am appalled at our support for Israel when they are determined to wipe these people right off the map. Why does Israel get more of our aid than any other country? Why are they allowed nukes? Why are they permitted to run over homes, destroy roads, cut off water supplies, deny Gazans basic needs? I was very disappointed that Obama refused to endorse their desire for a state at the UN.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
