Monnett's article was written in 1990, 21 years ago.

I would like to see an adequate harvest of sea otters, to assure their stability, and the stabilities of local shellfish and crustacean populations.Philip Mungerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14601488767955084836noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2083200247132907218.post-19157214420547881542011-08-11T11:48:05.083-08:002011-08-11T11:48:05.083-08:00It is interesting to read about the concern for se...It is interesting to read about the concern for sea otters in the Prince William Sound area.

Two decades after the Exxon Valdez oil spill, sea otter populations are very high in PWS, and such high population levels are impacting the commercial harvests of other species that the sea otters eat, such as important species of crabs.

Hundreds and thousands of sea otters are swimming around PWS and now in SE Alaska, devouring large swaths of valuable commercial crabs and other seafood important to the seafood industry.

Nary a word in the conservation community, but in the coastal Alaskan communities sea otters are emerging as a long term threat to the livelihood of many fishermen.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2083200247132907218.post-21401402595226099072011-08-10T23:18:56.348-08:002011-08-10T23:18:56.348-08:00With this report it would seem that Alaskans (thos...With this report it would seem that Alaskans (those who live and vote here) are being cut out of the equation, again. Granted US DOI has lots to answer for with the Gulf of Mexico/BP disaster, and it is good it has reconfigured itself. Never forget the Fed has a fiduciary responsibility, Government to Government, to consider local needs first.

However, as I read this report, the natural environmental concerns are not their priority. Notice ignorance of a complete herd of bison/Musk Ox lost in a storm just this past winter (Storm). These guys simply have no idea the treachery of this area. It's one thing to visit there in early August and something completely different December to May.

Thanx, nemnemcwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12010265631322069809noreply@blogger.com
