Shannyn Moore's Take on Gov. Palin's Judgement

(Sarah Palin, behind a .50 caliber machine gun, doing her Michael Dukakis impression last year.)

Shannyn Moore has written an article that seriously questions some apects of Gov. Palin's judgement. Guest post by Shannyn Moore:

Today is a historical day for Alaskans. Having been born and raised here, I can celebrate whole heartedly that an Alaskan politician has made the national stage for something other than corruption charges. Wow, the nation is stunned…you have a gun, Lady? Really? Neat! Can we vote NOW? The story of a real Alaskan woman, mother of five, uber-pro-life, a creationist, loves Jesus, hates the devil, married to a real life stud…well, you just can’t write this stuff. If John McCain had selected my favorite Alaskan Conservative, my father, instead of Governor Gump, I still wouldn’t vote for him.

When it comes to being one breath from the presidency, my nostalgia for an Alaskan being in the White House wanes fast. I want a vice president with good judgment. I don’t care what gender you are, or what color you are…I want your brain to be connected to your heart and spine. After the debacles of Frank Murkowski, I was ready to give Sarah Palin the benefit of a doubt and line up as an Alaskan First, before party. She has shown weakness on a few key issues that disappointed me in the past few months, and now are red flags with her new job offer.

Last spring there was the big announcement of Sarah Palin’s 5th pregnancy. I’m pro choice, happy she was able to make whatever choice was best for her family. With her oldest child in the military, three more at home, and one on the way she was getting quite a bit done. I would have wanted a nap and a spa, but that’s just me. In the last few weeks of her pregnancy she was flying all over the country, Washington D.C. and then to a conference of Republican Governors in Dallas. Her water broke at the conference and she decided to fly back to Alaska to have her 5th child that she knew had downs-syndrome. She passes up some of the finest children’s hospitals in Dallas, Seattle and Anchorage, to fly hours and then drive to 50 miles to her home town to have her child. I admire her ability to hold a child in during all those hours and miles above the Earth, and her staunch loyalty to Alaska to deliver her baby on Native Soil. But had I been on board one of those planes on the way to take a loved one off life support, or be at a wedding, or job interview, or any other event that we get on planes for, and had to be diverted by a woman who knowingly got on board after her water broke, I may not admire her uterine control so much. Her lack of judgment for fellow passengers seems obvious, but for someone who is so pro-life it seems reckless.

As Governor, Palin did bring back a special session to fix the previously bought tax on the oil industry. Not giving away our State’s resources doesn’t constitute standing up to Big Oil. I’m sure it feels like it with the pressure of the most powerful lobbyists in the world, but it just isn’t. It is standing UP for Big Oil to sue the federal government for listing polar bears on the endangered species list because it could affect future exploration. Alaskan towns are washing away, and our climate is changing. Permafrost is no longer “perma” in many places. The rapture is not an environmental policy.

I’m all about killing and grilling moose. So is Sarah. But to the degree she will influence elections by spending $400,000 of state money to propagandize her position to shoot wolves and bears out of planes is bizarre. You would think Alaska has a ban on the importation of Viagra for all the fervor to chase animals with airplanes.

Just days before last weeks election, her administration put up a website, had a press conference all to influence a ballot initiative. While at a press conference she was asked how she would vote on the issue and she came out against it, all be it after dis-robing herself of the “governor’s hat”. The initiative intended to beef up the environmental water standards for large scale open pit mines proposed in the Bristol Bay watershed. It is currently the home of the world’s largest wild salmon run. After the supreme court ruling in favor of Exxon over the Alaskan fishermen, paying damages for environmental damages seems like the cost of doing business rather than a deterrent. As a fellow fisher woman I was shocked by her stance, as an Alaskan I was upset at her lack of regard for the election process and her naivety to think her “personal opinion” wouldn’t alter the outcome.

John McCain came in 4th place during the Republican primary. His disregard of the US Constitution trumps his service. The National media has said Sarah and McCain are both Mavericks. A maverick in Washington wouldn’t have voted lock step with George Bush. To be a maverick republican in Alaska all you have to do is not be indicted or sitting in jail for selling your vote. For all the inexperience or judgment questions I have on Palin’s policies, she’s too good for him. You can put all the sugar on a turd pie that you want….John McCain will still be a turd pie.

The only thing more varied than Alaska’s landscape is its people. When it boils down to a flat tire when it is 20 below, you don’t ask political affiliations when you pull over to help. Sarah Palin is Alaskan, so am I. Politically we disagree on many things, but I’d help her change her tire if she needed it.

I like this read! To the point, and gives us a view of what others are thiking in her state! I'm a Repub who is voteing Dem. But, was thinking once again of going back to my party IF john Mccain picked a good v.p. I'm a woman and would have been excited about a women running with him. But my God, I wanted one who at least knew what the V.P. did, and knew she had to work with United states and not just wonder how productive the office would be for alaska (her words, not minel). She ain't ready to run on day one, and mccain could kill over the day he takes office given his age and medical problems, and he put us in the dangerouse hands of some one who doesn't know what a v.p does, let alone a president! God help us all!

I'm really curious about this part:

In the last few weeks of her pregnancy she was flying all over the country, Washington D.C. and then to a conference of Republican Governors in Dallas. Her water broke at the conference and she decided to fly back to Alaska to have her 5th child that she knew had downs-syndrome. Are you being toungue in cheek here? You can't really buy this right?

You know that no pictures of a pregnant looking Palin exist, and that all pics of Palin in the months leading up to her "delivery" have now been deleted from the Alaskan state website right?

The child is her daughters. My question - when is someone of import, maybe in the Legislature, going to go on record with this? They all know about it, they laughed their butts off when, an extremely thin Palin wearing tight clothes announced she was 7 months prengnant - with NO mention that she was carrying a downs syndrome baby by the way.

Why would someone in their right mind fly thousands of miles after their water broke? Why would someone in their right mind be flying AT ALL in the last weeks of pregnancy? Is she perhaps not in her right mind?

"Governor Gump" made my day.

I agree with Mary. When is someone going to look into the question of who is the mother and father of that baby?

I am a resident of Georgia, and all I can say is that Mrs. Palin has put Alaska on the map. It's refreshing to see some of the residents' viewpoints and offer a more personal perspective of a candidate the rest of the nation has not really known about. We've got a couple of months left to learn more, and to be quite honest I don't know if that's enough. Not that I support her party, but dang there were so many other people the nation was familiar with.

Anonymous said...

Checking in here from the mid-west. We wish you well in the far north.

But I must agree with Mary Contrary. Your governor seems to be a woman who tried to protect her child. But by "putting America first" (Not!) she has driven "child protection" to a whole new mendacity!

This needs to be exposed. And we're sorry it will affect you folks in Alaska.

But the country cannot abide a candidate like McCain who makes impromptu decisions, without carefully vetting everything, and puts the country as risk. Not only does she seem to lack good sense, she's not even a very good liar!

God help her daughter. And her grandson!

Anonymous said...

Think about it.

She already knew the baby had Down's Syndrome. As a pious Christianist, she had to bear it to term.

But of course, if there were a miscarriage on a long flight from Texas to Alaska, that would be God's doing, right?

Anonymous said...

How long did it take her fro when her water broke to fly from Dallas to Alaska and then drive to Wasilla?

I'm a physician and have come across some very sick newborns with a perinatal infection that came from too much time between water breaking and delivery.

And although intriguing, the fact that the baby was born with Downs makes more sense if the mother is born to a 44 year old than to someone her daughter's age. The risk of Downs increases significantly if the mother is in her 40s.

Enough of this conspiracy theory, if it is true, then the Dems will bring it out. As a person who will be a doctor in the next couple of years, I am appalled that someone would take an 8 hour flight and 50 mile drive after having her water break. In all fairness, she was quoted as "leaking amniotic fluid" not having a full on break in Dallas, and she did call her physician. Still, however, either she needs to be held accountable for negligence for endangering the life of her already challenged and pre-mature baby, or her physician needs to be severely repremanded. The first instructions her physician should have given her was to go to the hospital to check her dialation and to make sure that no infections were spread by the leaking fluid. Her madness that "nothing" was going to make her miss the speech, is not being devoted, it's negligent and stupid. This is not the person I want making judgements for my country that would influence myself and all of my friends and family (and before somebody says she isn't running for president, John McCain himself said that the most important quality in a VP was the ability to step in and lead the country).

ohjoy said...

Is the baby really Down Syndrome? Doesn't look like it to me. Just wondering if perhaps it is DD but not DS.

Anonymous said...

I happen to be a nurse. Been one since 1968.
I may not be up on the latest in OB/GYN, but any Dr. if called with the information that his/her patient was leaking amniotic fluid, was in their 40's and over 2000 miles from home would advise her to immediately go to a hospital or Dr to be checked as to whether or not she was in labor. To get onto a plane where the pressure changes dramatically all the time would definitely not be Sensible or advisable. Even if not in labor this could cause labor to begin and once the membrane is no longer intact the child and mother are more susceptible to bacteria and disease.
If she called her Dr and the Dr said she could fly home this Dr is guilty of malpractice.
Women in their 40's pregnant are even more likely to have major problems with their pregnancies and deliveries so this scenario seems totally at odds with any normal medical practice.
Another medical fact to add is that a woman is more likely to become pregnant immediately after birth than any other time.

Lots of women leak amniotic fluid and do not go into labor for days. Enough of the conspiracy theories! If there's something there, the Opposition Team will ferret it out, so until then, I think all of you should STFU and stick to the issues that matter.

Regarding how Sarah Palin delivered her latest child: I find myself embarrassed for people who level such criticisms. For all we know she had an important special relationship with her doctor in Alaska. I say butt out with such comments.

Regarding, "As Governor, Palin did bring back a special session to fix the previously bought tax on the oil industry. Not giving away our State’s resources doesn’t constitute standing up to Big Oil." - No? To me it does seem so.

I'm a Libertarian who plans to vote Democratic during this election cycle. I like some of Barrack Obama's thinking (read his books) and would like to see a black person as President (I'm white), but I find criticisms such as those originally posted to this blog distressing.

I am a practicing pediatrician in the Central Calif. Valley for nearly 1/3 of a Century. I'd like to offer a different view on her judgement to “fly back home” to deliver the baby. Until shown otherwise, I'll assume it's “her” baby. And for what was said, I'll assume she was _not_ examined by a competent obstetrician _before_ she decided to trek back home, just talked by phone with one (examined by any physician wouldn't do, it ought to have been a competent obstetrician, a seasoned specialist). After all, she was the Governor! What if something had happened?

What scares me about her careless decision is, she is someone who many people look up to, and as VP, many millions more will. With that seemingly “innocent” action, and in this Country of ours where “fact based reality” is not always ”trusted“, _how many people without her ample resources_ hasn't she potentialy influenced to take matters of life death in their own lay, untrained, not expert hands?

ANY practicing practitioner today would refuse to give her advice to do what she did _by phone_ & thousands of miles away. Unless a competent OB was flying with her and OK'd the return home, her decision was very scary for a public official. After all, her well being, now, belongs more to the people of Alaska, whom she must serve, than to herself.

I also believe it's next to impossible for a Governor to “fake” her pregnancy without some whistleblower coming out with the truth. Do you realize _how many people_ are, or aren't involved in a coverup like this, not to mention the janitorial staff where she did/“did not” deliver?!?

Finally, how can someone in her position believe and accept one part of Science (the medical part) but not important postulates of basic science _which underlie Medicine_ (evolution)? Does anyone believe we'd be using statistics to validate medical research (the way it's done) if we were divinely “created” ?!? Who's kidding wnom?

Today's Republican Party scares us to death.

If pro-lifers really believe that life begins at conception - then it's time individuals, including doctors, were held accountable for decisions that negatively effect that "life" - be it drinking, smoking, drugs, medications, over-exertion, or neglect while pregnant, as in Ms.Palin's by-passing a number of good hospitals on her way home.

Is this really where we want to go? Sorry, pro-lifers - you can't have it both ways!

"The rapture is not an environmental policy."

Just had to leave a comment to say, this is pure genius. I want it on a T-shirt.

Re Mrs. Palin's Wild Ride, in the long version of the story I read (cannot find a link right now) it seemed like the doc was being very careful to avoid malpractice. Something like "She did not ask me for advice about flying."

I just saw you on MSNBC. You are fantastic! I hope you keep speaking out in Alaska. It must be hard to be the minority there. I remember when I moved from a very progressive town to Arizona (UGH) and I had never met such backwards people in my life. It shared and shocked me although it doesn't scare me as much as the idea of Palin in the vice president (or president spot!). It is absolutely nuts! She is so incredibly unqualified and as a woman, she embarrasses me! A woman that conservative, that backwards, does not represent me or my needs or the needs of any other woman that I know! Please keep speaking out and THANK YOU!!

KUDOS TO SHANNYN.

Palin is a mean spirited person who does not understand diplomacy. She would be a disaster dealing with anyone who does not subscribe to her singleminded holier than thou views.

A prime example: Because of her religion based view on abortion, as Mayor of Wasilla, she made rape victims pay over one thousand dollars for the swaps and tools used by the police to examine the traumatized woman. Why? Because the rape kit contained a morning after pill. ( 20% of rape victims are impregnated. )

Just watched your interview with Keith Olberman on Countdown. Beauty, poise, intellect and no less than six comedic zingers in what seemed too little time to fully savor. I watched it four times and almost fell off my chair. Great timing and you barely cracked a smile. Super delivery and if even half of the stinging barbs are yours a great wit as well. MSNBC is hopefully paying attention as I don't like to channel surf but will if I have to. Take your time settling your affairs up there in "God's country", or the "Last Days Tour" assembly area, as your Governor might refer to it. You're needed here in the lower forty-eight ASAP, however, and though Senator Obama has already picked a Vice presidential running mate, Al Frankin is going to need someone to share barbs with in the Senate. You may notice a rocket nearby. grab hold and hang on, you're about to go for the ride of your life.

Thanks. It's good to hear an Alaskan POV.Palin's purposely false/ twisted charges against Obama are disturbing and make it impossible to identify any that might be on target. I fear the judgement of anyone who would wait 14 plus hours (many of them in flight) before going to the hospital to deliver a special needs child one month prematurely at a small town hospital, apparently by a doctor who is not an OB/GYN. (Bringing me back to the notion that Trig is Bristol's baby. Given Palin's outright lies, failure to release any medical records, the supermom persona while ignoring reports that Track spent 2 years on Oxycontin, Bristol's 5 month mono in Anchorage, Sadie Johnston's MySpace page featuring herself, baby Trig and the governor looking exactly like someone who had not recently given birth and Palin's general slim-mindedness, the baby switch seems plausible.) And the flirt & wink approach to campaigning is unbecoming to a vice president. Thanks for leting someone from the other side of the country sound off.

This "distribution" from oil co mpanies Palin speaks of: Is this something she has been able to accomplish in only 20 months in office, or is this the same check all residents of Alaska have been receiving since before I lived in Alaska, (and this was over 20 years ago). Is it possible that Palin has been fraudulently taking credit for negotiating disbursement of these funds in just 20 months in office? OR, is it possible that she actually got the oil companies to commit to coughing up these funds.
